Introduction to WLtoys 1/28 cars K989, K969, etc...

First of all, welcome to my blog. This will be your one stop information centre and database for WLtoys 1/28 scale the K989, K969 and the other cars with the same chassis but different model name.
In this blog I will give you all the information and experience I collected from my 2 years (and counting) with this car.
I will also have database of compatible parts whether from Kyosho Mini-Z or other manufactures and where you can buy them.

Introduction to WLtoys 1/28 cars K989, K969, etc...

WLtoys K989 is a 1/28 scale R/C car. If you can't picture how small it is then let's say it's the size of your hand. If you know something about radio control car you might have heard of Kyosho Mini-Z. That's where it all started, actually. Over the year this scale has become more and more popular with racing series and 3rd parties hop-up parts along with chassis with the same scale.

A few years ago WLtoys started to make their own chassis with this scale and here we are now, an affordable, fast and sophisticated micro R/C car at the size of your hand.
This car has metal plate chassis with double wishbone independent suspension, proper 3 wires digital servo, brushed FP130 motor, 2-in-1 (receiver+ESC) unit, 2.4GHz transmitter and fully proportional. It is highly moddable. With the affordable price tag at around  49 USD it quickly gained popularly within R/C community from new comers who want to start the R/C hobby, people who always wanted a Kyosho Mini-Z to veteran R/C racers.

There are 6 models in this series. The differences are the body, wheels and tyres. All the rest are the same except on the K969 model which has solid axle instead of differential.

  • K969 is a drift car with drift tyres and solid axle out of the box.
  • K979 is a buggy.
  • K989 is the most well-known of this series with Ford Fiesta body with Ken Block livery. The wheels are the same as K979.
  • K999 is a short course truck.
Then on the the monster truck wheels.
  • P929 and P939 are the one with big wheels so they have more ground clearance and perfect for driving on street and skate park.

This car has evolved over time. At the time I'm writing this blog there are 3 generations (or batches).
The first one being the one I have from early 2016. The only car that has metal dogbones as standard was P929. All the rest came with plastic dogbones and they were very brittle. Most people broke them within first run.
In late 2016 every car is fitted with metal dogbones as standard. Now from late 2017 they have white gears, presumably more durable and also metal ball link for smoother operation and durability.
So there's no better time to buy this R/C car.

The big plus of this car is that it is compatible with some of Kyosho Mini-Z AWD parts such as dogbones or swing shaft in Mini-Z terminology, wheels and tyres from Mini-Z AWD. Front one way differential also works with this car but it may need some modification. I say "may" because I'm investigating the way to use all Mini-Z compatible diffs to work in this car without modification on the diff itself.

It also compatible with Mini-Z Auto Scale body but there are very limited bodies you can use because the wheelbase is 98mm and shock towers are high.

That's it for this first entry of this blog. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it and get a glimpse of this fantastic little car.

See you in the next entry, bye.
